Event Description | Session 1: The Big Picture. This session will focus on the key subject knowledge needed to support phonics at phases 5 and 6 and spelling in KS2. It will also discuss expectations within the new curriculum; how to use assessment to identify children’s needs and how to plan for improvement. Session 2: Strategies and Progression. This session will focus on developing a progression across the key stage; how to cater for children with differing needs; developing strategies for teaching spelling and assessing progress and timetabling. Session 3: Monitoring. This final session will consider Subject Leaders’ role in monitoring and evaluation. It will provide ideas and materials to support this in school, as well as opportunities to reflect on what good practice looks like. |

Aims | By the end of the course delegates should: • Understand the requirements of the new curriculum in relation to phonics and spelling • Know what effective phonics teaching looks like in KS2 • Be able to audit development needs in school and plan for these • Be able to assess children’s needs effectively • Be able to implement an appropriate progression across KS2 • Have strategies to monitor the impact of this |
