Reading Conference - Creating Riveted Readers: Inspiring a Reading Culture

Event Code CONF/20/133
Event type Conference
Event Description

With the importance and value of reading for pleasure currently high on the national agenda, this conference aims to explore how we can create a culture of reading within and beyond schools. It will focus on how we can support children to become life-long, motivated readers, equipped with both the skills they need to access the curriculum and a passion for and love of reading. Delegates will have the opportunity to listen to experts in the field; explore interesting teaching approaches; consider how others have successfully made their schools reading schools and reflect on research.

We are thrilled to be joined by the award-winning author Tracey Corderoy, creator of the Shifty Mc.Gifty, Hubble Bubble and The Grunt and The Grouch series of children’s books. Tracey won the Hounslow Junior Book Award in 2014 for her book ‘Baddies Beasties and a Sprinkling of Crumbs’ and the Hillingdon Picture Book of the Year award in 2011 for ‘The Grunt and The Grouch.’ She writes for children across the primary age range - her previous life as a primary teacher giving her an excellent insight into what children want to read!

We are also delighted to be joined by Dr Ann Alston, senior lecturer in English Literature at UWE and author of The Family in English Children's Literature (Routlegde) and Roald Dahl: A Casebook (Macmillan). Ann spends a lot of time in schools, working directly with children in class and also delivering CPD to staff on critical literacy. Last year, she presented an extremely well-received session for subject leaders on reading the image in picture books and creating and empowering critical readers and she is back by popular demand!

In addition to our keynote speakers, we are also extremely pleased to be joined in the afternoon by a number of colleagues with good practice to share in relation to becoming a reading school; reading intervention; devleoping reading into writing teaching sequences and the Ofsted deep dive for reading and to offer a teach-meet at the end of the day.

It promises to be an inspiring and informative day and a not-to-be-missed conference for any school developing reading this year.
