SAS - Language, Vocabulary and Oracy in Maths - (Stroud Associations Schools Only)*

Event Code MATH/21/353
Event type Course / Online Training / Teaching & Learning
Event Description

Course for Stroud Association Schools Only.

This course reflects the expectations in the national curriculum around spoken language and reasoning.

“The national curriculum for mathematics reflects the importance of spoken language in pupils’ development across the whole curriculum – cognitively, socially and linguistically. The quality and variety of language that pupils hear and speak are key factors in developing their mathematical vocabulary and presenting a mathematical justification, argument or proof. They must be assisted in making their thinking clear to themselves as well as others and teachers should ensure that pupils build secure foundations by using discussion to probe and remedy their misconceptions.”

Vocabulary knowledge is vital for all children. Developing specific maths language will underpin children’s conceptual understanding. As part of the new Ofsted framework, inspectors will talk to children about mathematics and therefore children need to be able to verbalise their learning.

This course will be split into 2 sessions.

Session 1 will focus on development of vocabulary in mathematics and Session 2 will explore ways to use vocabulary to reason effectively.

Delegates will be contacted three days before the session with details of how to access the online training, which will be sent via a link to the email address on your CPD Online account.
