Event type | Course / Online Training / Teaching & Learning | ||||
Event Description | This course is for Stroud Association schools only. Fractions can be one of the most fun topics to teach and be taught very practically. However, it is one of the most difficult aspects of the maths curriculum to teach and is often taught in an abstract way without teachers having a full understanding of the prior knowledge that pupils need to have to be able to access the topic, for example linking fractions with division. In EYFS children experience fractions by simple sharing, which leads to an understanding on equal and non-equal groups. If this is not secure, then pupils will struggle with the next stage of fractions. When it comes to decimals and percentages, again they are often taught later in the school year rather than being taught as part of place value units. By teaching decimals and percentages within place value, we are given the pupils the building blocks, which leads to being embedded in long term memory, allowing space in the short-term memory for problem solving to take place. This two-hour online course will track through the progression within the national curriculum for fractions, decimals, and percentages. The course will look at both subject knowledge and the pedagogy for teaching these areas. It will give you ideas on how to teach all three aspects practically and within real life contexts. As part of the course, you will receive additional resources to support you to develop this aspect of maths back in your school/classroom. This course will support all teachers and teaching assistants. Delegates will be contacted three days before the session with details of how to access the online training, which will be sent via a link to the email address on your CPD Online account. Please ensure that the email address you have registered with is correct. If it needs changing this can be done via your CPD Online account or please contact the Training Admin Team on 01454 863183. Only the actual delegate booked onto the course will be able to participate and must announce themselves by confirming their name and school in the group chat |
