SAS - How to Organise and Lead a Surgery for Struggling / Disengaged Learners - (Stroud Association Schools Ony)*

Event Description

The course is for Stroud Association schools only. 


The session will support SENCos to:


• Understand the process, the preparation for and the management of an effective surgery
• How to support your teaching staff with managing a variety of needs within the classroom
• Support the early identification of children who are struggling
• Monitor and support class teacher engagement
• Identify whole school/KS specific training needs


This in turn will support classroom teachers to:


• Identify the barrier/s to learning
• provide specific achievable manageable strategies to engage the child
• support in the differentiation of classroom resources


A morning session will include:


• modelling of the surgery
• the preparatory questionnaire
• the surgery cycle to include a review surgery, school walk, work scrutiny, and staff meeting
• the optimum time to carry out a surgery/ies
• the impact of the surgeries on child, teachers and whole school effectiveness.


For the modelling exercise - SENCos will be asked to bring along a summary of an anonymised case from their setting to share.


Delegates will be contacted three days before the session with details of how to access the online training, which will be sent via a link to the email address on your CPD Online account. Aims

  • Provide a model for running effective surgeries

  • Support SENCos to work effectively with staff to overcome barriers for pupils with learning needs

  • Provide a way to monitor stafff knowledge and accountability for pupils with SEND

  • To help SENCos to improve provision for pupils with SEND and ensure their needs are met effectively
