This year, we are offering a series of sessions to support practitioners in Reception and Year 1. The impact of the pandemic is still being felt and many teachers are finding that pupils in Early Years and KS1 are struggling with language and communication.

This series of sessions, led by our Early Years expert, Justine Gregory, will look at various aspects of communication, language and literacy and provide support and guidance to help develop children’s skills.

Last year, in conjunction with subject leaders, we wrote modified criteria to support writing assessment in non-statutory year groups as part of our Covid support for schools.

In response to requests from a considerable number of schools, we have now revised this so that the statements are fully aligned to the whole curriculum and can be used from 2022 onwards to support writing assessment and moderation. To support teachers, we are running a twilight session to share the rationale behind the criteria and explain how the statements should be used to support accurate assessment. ...

These surgeries provide an opportunity for teachers to discuss any pupils they would like support to assess. Year 6 teachers can bring along children's writing evidence and work alongside the LA moderator, who will provide advice and guidance about assessment and next steps in learning, as well as anything else that may be useful (such as planning ideas, text recommendations etc.)
